La Preuve (Proof en anglais) est une pièce de théâtre créée par l'Américain David Auburn, qui lui vaut en 2001 le prix Pulitzer et le Tony Award de la meilleure pièce. Cette pièce aurait notamment été inspirée par le travail d'Andrew Wiles qui a en partie démontré en 1994 le dernier théorème de Fermat.
Intrigue : Catherine demeure dans l’ombre de son père, Robert, professeur à l’université de Chicago dont les découvertes révolutionnèrent plusieurs champs des mathématiques, avant qu’il ne succombe des suites d’une maladie mentale. Ayant mis de côté ses propres ambitions en mathématiques afin de prendre soin de Robert pendant des années, Catherine est confrontée à une instabilité intérieure croissante et se sent maintenant envahie de doutes quant à son équilibre mental et sa place dans le monde des mathématiques. Le rapport déjà fragile qu’elle entretient avec la santé et la normalité est menacé avec l’apparition de Hal, l’un des protégés de Robert, qui est décidé à passer au peigne fin plus d’une centaine de cahiers de notes de Robert à la recherche de la perle rare mathématique, et par l’arrivée de sa sœur, Claire, qui nourrit des plans pour le futur de Catherine.

Proof is a 2000 play by the American playwright David Auburn. The play premiered Off-Broadway in May 2000, and transferred to Broadway in October 2000. The play won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play.
Plot: Catherine stands in the shadow of her father, Robert, a professor at Chicago University who revolutionized several mathematical fields before eventually succumbing to mental illness. After putting aside her own mathematical ambitions in order to spend years caring for Robert, Catherine has become increasingly unstable and is now plagued with doubts about her own sanity and her place in the world of mathematics. Her tenuous grasp on health and normalcy is further strained by the appearance of one of Robert's protégés, Hal, who is determined to look through over a hundred of Robert's notebooks in search of mathematical gems, and by the arrival of her sister, Claire, who has her own plans for Catherine's future.
